Praying in the Spirit is a transformative practice that moves prayer from a natural, often limited human effort into a dynamic, supernatural partnership with God. It empowers you to pray in perfect alignment with God's will, build your spiritual strength, and overcome limitations in your understanding.

 

The strong spirit of a man sustains him in bodily pain or trouble, but a weak and broken spirit who can raise up or bear? Proverbs 18:14 AMP

​The Holy Spirit has been sent to help us.

 

"In conclusion, be strong in the Lord [be empowered through your union with Him]; draw your strength from Him [ that strength which His boundless might provides]." Ephesians 6:10 AMP

 

Paul's letter to the Ephesians emphasizes that believers should not rely on their own strength, but on the limitless power and grace of God. 

Jesus introduced the person of the Holy Spirit before His death and resurrection, emphasizing how important it was to recognize and receive Him. The name Jesus used to describe the Holy Spirit is exactly what He does. The Holy Spirit is called the Comforter or Helper. The Greek word is Paraclete and the Amplified Bible reads: 

But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him (the Holy Spirit) to you [to be in close fellowship with you]. John 16:7

Jesus told us to recognize the Holy Spirit and receive Him. Paul instructed us to yield to Him and to be led by Him. In the area of receiving healing, He is of utmost help.

For the promise [of the Holy Spirit] is for you and your children and for all who are far away [including the Gentiles], as many as the Lord our God calls to Himself.” Acts 2:39 AMP

If you study the use of speaking in tongues, which is unique to the New Testament church, you will discover that there are many benefits to this kind of spiritual expression. These are some of the physical benefits of praying in tongues:

THE PHYSICAL BENEFITS OF PRAYING IN TONGUES

A brain specialist was interested in finding out if there was a relationship between the brain and praying in tongues. He conducted research and several tests with some interesting results. He found that when we pray in tongues, we actively stimulate the hypothalamus, the part of our brain responsible for:
 

• the pituitary gland and all target endocrine glands

• the total immune system

• the entire autonomic system

• the production of brain hormones called endorphins and enkephalons, which are chemicals that the body produces, and are 100 to 200 times more powerful than morphine.

 

When we pray in tongues, we are directly and indirectly stimulating a significant part of the body's central nervous system. This in turn causes the brain to release a large number of hormones, increasing the body's immune system. Praying in tongues produces an effect similar to other physical activities like running and swimming.



THE SPIRITUAL BENEFITS OF PRAYING IN TONGUES

Speaking in tongues edifies or builds up your inner man on your faith.

For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. 1 Corinthians 14:4 NKJV

But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, Jude 20 NKJV


Healing flows out of the rivers of living water in your spirit.

He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” John 7:38 NKJV

And it shall be that every living thing that moves, wherever the rivers go, will live. There will be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters go there; for they will be healed, and everything will live wherever the river goes. Ezekiel 47:9 NKJV


You receive power and boldness to speak the Word.

But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8 (NKJV)

And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness. Acts 4:31 (NKJV)

The Holy Spirit will take hold with you against your weakness.

Likewise, the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Romans 8:26 (NKJV)

Praying in tongues releases the resurrection power of the Holy Spirit who gives life to your body.

But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. Romans 8:11 (NKJV)

Your spirit is speaking directly to God while your mind is still.

For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. 1 Corinthians 14:2 (NKJV)

For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. 1 Corinthians 14 (NKJV)

 

Speaking in tongues assists you in giving thanksgiving to God by allowing the Holy Spirit to pray through you. It by passes the limitations of the human mind and vocabulary, enabling you to offer perfect, unhindered praise and intimate gratitude to the Lord.

 

In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul directly connects this spiritual gift to gratitude. He states that when a person prays in a tongue, "thou verily givest thanks well".

For you indeed give thanks well,  (1 Corinthians 14:17b (NKJV)

 

The Holy Spirit fills you with God's love and helps you to stay in that love. 

Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. Romans 5:5 (NKJV)

But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, Jude 20 (NKJV)

keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. Jude 21 (NKJV)

The Holy Spirit quickens or makes alive the person a rhema word of God to you.

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh conveys no benefit [it is of no account]. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life [providing eternal life]. John 6:63 (AMP) 

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Ephesians
6:17 (AMP)

Praying in the Spirit brings perfect rest.

For with stammering lips and another tongue He will speak to this people, Isaiah 28:11 (NKJV)

To whom He said, “This is the rest with which You may cause the weary to rest,” And, “This is the refreshing”; Yet they would not hear. Isaiah 28:12 (NKJV)

You can unselfishly pray the perfect will of God concerning your physical situation.

Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:27 (NKJV)

Praying in the Spirit may not be easy at first, because your spirit is praying instead of your intellect. You may not be emotional or feel any special power or thrill. Don't be discouraged, but fortify yourself by being reminded of the spiritual benefits of praying in tongues.

The Holy Spirit will also help you to walk in love and forgive someone who has hurt of offended you. It is better to humble yourself and to confess your faults than to hold a grudge.

THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL GUIDE YOU

In the Bible, David inquired of the Lord in several instances, notably when he sought guidance during the Amalekite raid on Ziklag (1 Samuel 30:7-8) (NKJV)

Then David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech’s son, “Please bring the ephod here to me.” And Abiathar brought the ephod to David.

8 So David inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?”  And He answered him, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all.”

He also asked God whether to go up against the Philistines, receiving affirmative answers (2 Samuel 5:19) (NKJV)

So David inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?” And the Lord said to David, “Go up, for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into your hand.”

Another instance includes David asking if he should go up to any of the cities of Judah, to which the Lord responded positively (2 Samuel 2:1) (NKJV)

It happened after this that David inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I go up to any of the cities of Judah?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up.” David said, “Where shall I go up?” And He said, “To Hebron.”

When you follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit, He will lead you to victory, just as He did for David. Your faith will be ignited by a word from God and by the Holy Spirit. Then you can run through a troop and leap over the wall!

For You will light my lamp; The Lord my God will enlighten my darkness. For by You I can [a]run against a troop, By my God I can leap over a wall. Psalm 18:28, 29 (NKJV)

The Holy Spirit will always prompt you to act like the Bible is true and give you help in receiving what you need.

THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL PROMPT YOU TO ACT IN FAITH

The Holy Spirit is Heaven's prompter who has the script and knows that you need to say at the appointed time. Begin speaking the words of the Author and Finisher of your faith. The Holy Spirit might prompt you to laugh, praise, dance, rejoice, or even forgive somebody who offended you. If you have been praying in the language of the Spirit, you have some assistance from the Comforter, Helper, Standby, Intercessor, Strengthener and Advocate.

Faith is an act. The moment you see or hear God's Word and it register on your spirit, you need to act on the Word. Make an effort to move something and praise God, like the man Paul preached to at Lystra.

And in Lystra a certain man without strength in his feet was sitting, a cripple from his mother’s womb, who had never walked. 9 This man heard Paul speaking. [c]Paul, observing him intently and seeing that he had faith to be healed, 10 said with a loud voice, “Stand up straight on your feet!” And he leaped and walked.  Acts 14:8-10 (NKJV)

What kind of power does the Holy Spirit make available? RESURRECTION, hell-busting, yoke destroying, power! It is the same Spirit that anointed Jesus who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed of the devil. It is the same Spirit that physically raised Christ from the dead.

As you pray in the Spirit, His anointing will quicken your mortal body.

WORSHIP IN THE SPIRIT

 

The Hour Is Coming and Is Now Here

When Jesus said this, he was talking to a Samaritan woman near her hometown. She had challenged him about the difference between places where Samaritans and Jews worship. She said, “Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship” (John 4:20).

 

Jesus responded by turning her attention away from geography to something astonishing that was happening in her very presence. He said, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. . . . The hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth” (John 4:21, 23).

In John 3:6 Jesus connects God’s Spirit and our spirit in a remarkable way. He says, “That which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” In other words, until the Holy Spirit quickens our spirit with the birth of new life, our spirit is so dead and unresponsive, it does not even qualify as spirit. Only that which is born of the Spirit is (a living) spirit. So when Jesus says that true worshipers worship the Father “in spirit,” He means that true worship comes only from spirits made alive and sensitive by the quickening of the Spirit of God.

Let the rivers of living water flow out of your innermost being (John 7:38).

THE LANGUAGE OF THE SPIRIT IS THE LANGUAGE OF HEAVEN
 

For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 

15 from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 

16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, 

17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 

18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height—19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, Ephesians 3:14-20 (NKJV)


Spend time praying in tongues and experience greater strength working in you from the GREATER ONE.

God doesn’t want us to live weak, wimpy, helpless, pathetic, barely-getting-by lives. That’s why He sent the Holy Spirit to be our “Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby).”

 

Acts 1:8 (AMPC) says, “But you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends (the very bounds) of the earth.”
